Busking, Franked, Mind and Whilst

The British have several words that we don’t have in American English. It was fun to see these signs.

whilst We know this word, whilst, but we just don’t use it in the US very much. I saw it a LOT in England.

franked Sheese! I had to ask someone what franked means. It seems to be roughly equivalent to “Metered” mail in the US. Actually, it comes from the French word “franc”, which really means “free” (as in not costing anything). Franked Mail used to be reserved for government mail, which they got to send for free.

busking We saw this notice in the London Undergound (The “Tube”). Thank goodness I did not accidently do any busking!

mind I guess we all know what this means, but it is cute, in a very English way.

The other interesting word usage was the manner in which they informed you, in the Underground, which way to go to get out. They have a black sigh with yellow letters and an arrow that says “Way Out”. Man! Here is an image of a more elaborate version.
