Tributes To Francis Butler Simkins
Five persons-four of whom knew Francis Simkins intimately-were
selected to make remarks at the Memorial Exercises between the
Ante-Communion Service and the Service for the Dedication of the
Plaque. They were:
- R. Harold Norris, former Mayor of Edgefield and a friend of
Francis Simkins since their boyhood.
- John E. Talmadge, Professor of
English at the University of Georgia and an associate of Francis
Simkins since they met on the faculty of Emory University in
1926.
- James W. Patton, Director of the
Southern Historical Collection of the University of North Carolina
Library and a co-author with Francis Simkins of The Women of the
Confederacy.
- Mary C. Simms Oliphant, a
historian of South Carolina and a friend of the Simkins family for 60
years.
- Carlee McClendon, former
director of the Edgefield County Historical Society and now a member
of the staff of the South Carolina Tricentennial Commission.
